In what order should engagement, wedding, or promise couple rings be worn?

Some people do not consider couples matching jewelry when planning and thinking about the ring they will wear to represent their love and commitment with their partner. After the wedding, it's more common for couples to begin thinking about the band that will mark their marriage. There's another type of band that can be worn instead of an engagement or wedding ring, or added to either. It's called the matching couple necklaces.

How do you wear the rings that are important to you? Which order would you choose if you were to purchase all three rings: engagement, wedding, or eternity? We are here to help answer your questions so that you can create a stack that perfectly represents your love.

Consider diamond-simulant stud earrings, a classic pendant necklace or delicate bracelet to complement your wedding ring on the big day as well as afterward.

     The Engagement Band

The engagement ring, or first piece of jewelry exchanged between you and your partner when you become engaged. The engagement ring has been a traditional symbol of marriage for hundreds years. The engagement ring usually has a stone or diamond in the middle. This is a tradition from the 15th-century. The cut, style and color of the ring, however, can vary widely.

Due to their beauty and significance, couples often give the engagement ring the most consideration.

Which finger do I wear my engagement ring on?

The engagement band is usually worn on your left-hand finger. This finger has become known as the engagement finger. In the beginning, couples wear their engagement rings alone. But after the marriage, they stack them with the band. Some couples forgo wearing the wedding ring and instead wear just the engagement.

     Wedding Ring

Wedding rings came before engagement rings. This was probably because marriages used to be simpler in days gone by, and that there wasn't an "engagement period" until fairly recent times. In medieval times a marriage was performed by a couple accepting a ring from a male partner.

Due to its shape, the circle has always been associated with marriage and eternal romance. Later, when rings also came to be used as symbols of marriage vows, wedding rings and engagement bands became two separate rings. An engagement ring is given to signify a relationship, while the wedding band is given at the wedding to signify a marriage. It is still common to wear an engagement ring along with a marriage ring.

Which finger do I wear my wedding ring on?

The tradition that you wear your wedding rings on your ring is centuries-old. Ancient Egyptians were convinced that the fourth index finger of the left handed contained a love vein that led straight to the chest. It is a tradition that men and females still wear rings on their left ring finger.

     The Eternity Ring

What is the eternity ring? It is a type of ring. This style of ring symbolizes everlasting love. As such, it is commonly given for a wedding, or any other special event, including the birth of a new baby. The bride can also wear eternity rings on their wedding band.

Its name comes from its two main characteristics: the symbolism of the ring and its "eternal" pattern, which features diamonds and gemstones in a continuous or never-ending circle. The diamonds and gemstones in the eternity ring pattern are often all of the same colour and cut.

These rings are stunningly sparkly and eye-catching, but are prone to damage from loose stones. This is why "half-eternity", or half-bands, have become popular as a substitute. Half-eternity band rings are adorned with diamonds, gemstones, or both, over the top half or face of the ring. The half-eternity bands are less expensive because there are half as few diamonds on the band.

Eternity and infinity bands are often confused. However, they do not represent the very same thing. Infinity rings feature an infinity or figure 8 symbol, not a never ending row of diamonds.

What finger are you wearing an eternity ring upon?

When wearing an eternity, there's no standard rule about which finger to wear it. When wearing an eternity band as a marriage ring, it is best to wear it left on the ring finger. If you are given an eternity ring for a birthday, anniversary or childbirth, you may choose the finger on which you wear it. A matching eternity ring to your wedding band and engagement ring is a great way to add a new ring in the stack.

If you want to avoid detracting from your engagement, wearing an eternity band on your ring or middle finger may be the best option.

The correct order of wedding, engagement and eternity rings

The rings may be different but it's quite common to stack one on top the other. You might wonder how to wear each of the rings in order if you're wearing them all together. For multiple rings, you can use this sequence:

To complete the set, first slide on your wedding bands, then wear your Engagement Ring on top.

     Stacking Unique Wedding Rings

Because there are so may unique wedding, eternity, and engagement rings on the market today, it may not make sense to stack them this way. Wedding bands may be shaped to sit snugly around an engagement setting at either the top of the ring or the bottom. This is when you should wear your wedding band over or below the engagement ring. Also, if the wedding ring in question is curved, a stacking eternity band over it would not be appropriate.

Similarly, engagement rings with low settings may not allow a wedding ring to sit flush. Consider wearing your ring elsewhere if you're wearing a wedding ring of a slightly different shape, or an engagement band with a low mounting.

It is possible to have your jeweler design a custom ring if you want to wear the rings all at once. Diamond Nexus offers custom jewellery services. We can help create a wedding, eternity, and engagement ring which fits together perfectly. The custom design can be a great way for you to customize the stack further and get exactly what you want.

     Mix and Match Over Time

The purchase of an eternity ring or wedding band is not something that can be done all in one go. Since each ring represents a large investment, you can add rings to the stack at any time. In the past, wedding rings and engagement rings were often purchased in sets. Today, however, more people prefer to slowly add to their fine jewellery collection.

If your wedding and engagement rings aren't a perfect match then that's perfectly fine. As fashions evolve, mixing and matching different wedding rings and eternity bands can be an enjoyable way to switch up styles. Mixing and matching rings on the ring finger makes it easier to add an Anniversary Ring later. You don't have to limit yourself only to one precious alloy. All the precious materials, from rose gold to white gold and platinum, are stunning.

It's easier to select a wedding ring, or an eternity ring, if you start by choosing the right style of engagement ring.
